Gorakhgad Fort is a striking hill fort in the Sahyadri ranges of Maharashtra, known for its distinctive rocky pinnacle, ancient caves, steep rock-cut steps and panoramic mountain views. The trek starts from Dehri village and gradually enters a forested section before reaching the rocky base of the fort.
The initial trail passes through forest and relatively gradual terrain before becoming steeper near the fort. The upper section includes rock-cut steps and narrow rocky patches leading towards the caves and summit. The fort also has a temple at the top and offers views towards surrounding peaks including Machchindragad, Siddhagad and the Ahupe Ghat region.
Gorakhgad is particularly known for its challenging final ascent. The rock-cut sections can become slippery during the monsoon, and extra care is required around exposed and steep portions of the trail.
This trek is ideal for adventure enthusiasts looking for a challenging Sahyadri fort trek combining forest trails, rock-cut architecture, caves, temple darshan and spectacular mountain scenery.
