Ratangad Fort is one of the most scenic hill forts in the Sahyadri, beautifully located near Bhandardara in Maharashtra. Known as the “Jewel of the Sahyadri,” Ratangad offers a memorable combination of forest trekking, waterfalls, ancient architecture, mountain views, caves, natural rock formations, and thrilling ladder sections.
Standing at an altitude of approximately 4,255 ft, the fort provides spectacular views of Bhandardara Dam, Kalsubai, Alang-Madan-Kulang (AMK), Katrabai and surrounding Sahyadri ranges. The trek begins from Ratanwadi, where participants can also visit the historic Amruteshwar Temple, an ancient Hemadpanthi-style Shiva temple known for its intricate stone carvings.
The trail passes through lush forests and scenic monsoon landscapes before reaching the fort's caves and famous natural rock formation, Nedhe (Needle Hole). Itinerary:
- 10:00 PM: Depart from Pune
- 04:00 AM: Reach the base village Ratanwadi, which is the starting point of the Ratangad trek.
- 05:00 AM: Have breakfast Maggie/Poha and Tea
- 05:30 AM: Start Ratangad Fort Trek (3 hours). Begin the guided trek through the mesmerizing forest. The trail is surrounded by lush greenery, trees, and a cool atmosphere. Ladder Climbing

- Ratangad's seasonal flowers and monsoon flora are dependent on rainfall, weather conditions, and the natural flowering cycle.
- Flower blooming, density, and visibility may vary from season to season; sightings of specific flowers cannot be guaranteed.
- The trek passes through forest trails, rocky sections, slippery patches, waterfalls and ladder sections.
- Participants must wear proper trekking shoes with good grip. Chappals, sandals and floaters are strictly not permitted.
- Weather conditions in the Sahyadri can change quickly, especially during the monsoon.
- Participants should carry adequate rain protection and keep mobile phones, cameras and other electronic equipment protected from water.
- Amruteshwar Temple is located at Ratanwadi and temple access may be subject to local conditions and temple management rules.
- Participants must not pluck flowers, damage vegetation, disturb wildlife, or remove natural objects from the forest.
- The itinerary is tentative and may be modified due to heavy rainfall, slippery trail conditions, traffic, forest restrictions, safety concerns, or other unforeseen circumstances.
- The Trek Leader's decision regarding route changes and itinerary adjustments shall be final and binding in the interest of participant safety.
Safety & Risk Awareness
At Adventure Club Pune, participant safety is our highest priority. Ratangad is a natural Sahyadri mountain environment involving forest trails, rocky terrain, steep sections, ladder climbing, waterfalls and changing weather conditions.
During the monsoon, trails may become extremely slippery and visibility may reduce due to rain or fog. Participants should maintain a safe distance from exposed edges, follow the marked route and strictly follow instructions from the Trek Leader.
The trek involves physical exertion and participants should be prepared for prolonged walking, climbing and descending on uneven terrain.
Rules And Regulations
- Consumption of alcohol, smoking, or any kind of intoxicants is strictly prohibited during the trek; if found under the influence, the participant will be immediately removed from the group without refund.
- Littering, throwing plastic, wrappers, bottles or any waste material on the trekking trail or inside the forest is strictly prohibited.
- Plucking flowers, damaging plants, disturbing wildlife, or removing natural objects from the forest is strictly prohibited.
- Loud music, shouting or creating unnecessary disturbance in forest areas, villages and near the temple is not permitted.
- Participants must follow the instructions of the Trek Leader and local authorities at all times. The Trek Leader's decision regarding safety, route changes and group movement shall be final.
- Participants must exercise extreme caution on slippery rocks, steep sections, waterfalls and ladder sections, particularly during the monsoon.
- Any participant whose behavior creates a safety risk, causes inconvenience, harassment or distress to other participants or staff may be removed from the trek without refund.
- Adventure Club Pune provides basic first-aid and trek support; however, medical treatment, evacuation, hospitalization or emergency transportation expenses shall be borne by the participant.
- Participants are advised not to carry expensive jewellery, unnecessary valuables or fragile belongings. Adventure Club Pune will not be responsible for loss, theft or damage to personal belongings.
- Participants must respect local villagers, temple traditions, fellow trekkers, wildlife and the natural environment throughout the trek.
- The trek operates with a minimum of 12 confirmed participants. If the minimum strength is not achieved, Adventure Club Pune may offer an alternate trek, reschedule the batch or provide a refund as applicable.
- Simple vegetarian meals will be provided as mentioned in the inclusions. Personal food preferences or additional food orders are not included unless specifically confirmed.
- A dedicated WhatsApp coordination group may be created before departure for sharing pickup details, operational updates and on-ground coordination.
- Pickup points and timings may be changed in case of traffic, vehicle issues or other operational requirements. Participants will be informed whenever possible.
- The itinerary and schedule may change due to weather, road conditions, forest restrictions, safety concerns or unavoidable circumstances.
- By registering for the trek, participants confirm that they have read, understood and agreed to the applicable Adventure Club Pune Terms & Conditions.
Health & Fitness Declaration
Participants confirm that they are physically fit to participate in a full-day moderate-level mountain trek involving walking, climbing, descending, ladder sections and uneven terrain.
Participants with any medical condition, allergy, injury, physical limitation or regular medication requirement should inform the trek coordinator before departure.
Participants are responsible for carrying their required personal medicines and prescribed medical supplies.
Travel & Medical Insurance
- Participants are strongly encouraged to obtain suitable travel, medical and personal accident insurance before joining the trek.
- Unless specifically mentioned under the inclusions, Adventure Club Pune does not provide individual insurance coverage.
- Any expenses relating to medical treatment, hospitalization, emergency transportation or evacuation shall be borne by the participant and/or their insurer.
Weather, Natural Conditions & Force Majeure
Ratangad is located in a mountainous and forested region where weather and trail conditions can change rapidly. Adventure Club Pune reserves the right to modify, postpone, reroute, reschedule or cancel the trek in the interest of participant safety.
Such decisions may arise due to:
